The Golden State Valkyries had one key order of business to get to before starting the rest of their offseason: keeping Veronica Burton around.
Burton was a restricted free agent after her breakout Most Improved Player campaign last season when she started all 44 games and averaged 11.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and a team-high 6.0 assists per game. The guard was the only WNBA player in 2025 to lead their team in total points (525), rebounds (192), assists (265), steals (50) and blocks (27).
Burton, who was selected from Dallas in the expansion draft in 2024, signed a three-year deal under the new WNBA collective bargaining agreement. She will make $925,000 in the first year of the deal, then $971,250 before taking in $1,017,500 in the final year.
The Valkyries now have just two players under contract — Burton and guard Kate Martin. They lost Monique Billings, who signed with the Indiana Fever on Saturday, and still have Temi Fagbenle, Kayla Thornton and Tiffany Hayes are all unrestricted free agents, while Cecilia Zandalasini is their next restricted free agent priority.
The WNBA Draft is Monday night, and the Valkyires pick No. 8 overall. There is still a long way to go before their compete 2026 roster comes into focus, but keeping Burton around was an important first step.
