For less than an hour Monday night, Flau'jae Johnson was a member of the Golden State Valkyries, but her departure stirred as much chaos as any move the Valkyries have ever made.
After giving no answers in her post-draft press conference, Valkyries general manager Ohemaa Nyanin told ESPN that the trade was more complex than it looked.
“Seattle and I had an agreement to trade picks prior to any athlete selection. I want to be super clear about the draft: This had nothing to do with Flau’jae or any specific athlete selection.”
Valkyries Beat confirmed with the WNBA that teams had until 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday to trade draft picks. After that, teams can only trade the players they select, so any pre-draft trade agreements cannot be official until they trade the rights to the players themselves after.
Golden State had a target with the No. 8 pick who was selected earlier and opted to trade of the spot for a similar selection at 16 and add the 2028 second rounder while it was on the clock, even though the sides had the framework of a deal in place, sources told Valkyries Beat. But Johnson being available was a shock to Seattle.
It certainly makes the Storm’s comments make more sense.
“The opportunity to add Flau'jae was really exciting and incredible for us,” Storm general manager Talisa Rhea said. “We didn't think that she would be available at that point. We had been in conversations, and so as we got closer to that pick, once it became a reality, just really excited. We're really excited how she aligns and helps us this year, but also is going to be a really important piece for us as we're building for the future.”
What stands out is the Storm also had the No. 14 pick within the first round, so going just outside the first round for the first pick of the second does feel like a potential salary move.
The Valkyries did get a player, though, so what are they getting in her?
