LOS ANGELES — Speaking for the first time since being waived by the Golden State Valkyries last week, Kate Martin was emotional.

“It's a very overwhelming process, for sure,” she said. “A lot of my emotion comes from just being a little bit overwhelmed. And then I think a lot of it comes from, I loved it there, I loved my time there, I love my teammates. That's the hardest part leaving my teammates. But I also know I'm going to be surrounded by amazing people here, and I can't wait to make more friendships and create new relationships.”

Martin met with reporters at Crypto.com Arena just 45 minutes before the Sparks’ opening day contest against the Las Vegas Aces. She had landed in LA earlier in the hour.

Martin said that she was told she would be cut on Wednesday of last week, and there had been talks about her returning as a development player.
