Notebook from 91-80 win against Wings
The Valkyries have historically struggled against good teams. Against the WNBA’s top four squads last year (Minnesota, Las Vegas, Atlanta and Phoenix) they went 3-12 This year, most of their wins have been against the league’s bottom once again, but along with the 87-70 win in New York, Wednesday felt bona fide.
Of course, next up they have 12-3 Minnesota coming off a rout against the banged-up Sparks and they are the last team the Valkyries have never defeated.
To end the Commissioner’s Cup, the Valkyries raised $17,000 for Youth UpRising after finishing 5-2 in the in-season tournament. According to the team, “the funds will directly support the non-profit organization’s mission to drive economic mobility and community health in East Oakland.”
