ATLANTA — The Valkyries were looking for their fight, and they had two days to wonder where it went. After Gabby Williams was caught giving an animated speech following the Game 3 loss, she spoke the past couple of days about working to be their emotional leader.
It turned out, she needed it as much as the rest of her team.
“I didn't like my last game, I didn't like who I was in that last game, so I think stepping up in that role made me step up individually,” she said after her 7-for-21, 17 point performance. “If I want to lead my team, I have to be the one that sets the tone, and I have to lead by example as well. I think that motivated me to set the tempo today, start off the game with a lot of aggressiveness. Before the game I just talked to the team about not having regrets, and that the beauty of our sport is as bad as we felt on Wednesday, we get to turn around and make it right up to that.”
Now the Valkyries will go home to Chase Center with a home court advantage again and the series being essentially a best-of-3. They just defeated Dallas and Las Vegas in three games in the previous two rounds to get to the Finals.
They just need two more wins to take the title, and with two games at home, things look far less bleak than after the Game 3 loss.
"One thing that I had told the team after the last game is the goal when we play on the road ... just steal one on the road,” said veteran center Kiah Stokes, who has won three WNBA titles with Las Vegas. “So yeah, we lost on Wednesday. but to me, that doesn't mean we're out of anything," Stokes said. "Because our goal was there and could still be accomplished if we won today, and then we go back home.”
Unrelated to the game, but Williams and Veronica Burton were both left of both all-WNBA teams that were announced on Saturday.
