The Valkyries got through the WNBA trade deadline on Sunday without making a move, and that’s probably for the best.

Kelsey Plum went to Phoenix for a first round pick, second round pick and guard Monique Akoa Makani. The Mercury had a little more cap space to play with, but that probably wasn’t a great deal for a team so far outside the playoffs.

For Golden State, it would have been different. They are cemented in the postseason — and even championship — conversation, and arguably a scorer away from being there.

Plum might have been that, but on an expiring deal, giving up that much was likely not worth it. Because of where the Valkyries are in the salary cap, they almost surely would have had have given up either Tiffany Hayes or Kayla Thornton, plus 2025 first-rounder Juste Jocyte in addition to picks.

By standing pat, the Valkyries made a statement that they believe in the current roster enough to give it a chance. That aligns with what they’ve been saying since the start of the season.

“When you have a great culture and great chemistry, you just don’t mess with it,” Natalie Nakase told reporters before Sunday’s game against Toronto. “It’s something that’s very rare in sports.”
